Siberian Husky: The Majestic Adventurer with a Heart of Ice and Fire

Fun Fact

Huskies have a thick double coat that protects them from the cold, even in sub-zero temperatures!

Resembling a wolf, this breed is one of the fluffiest in the world!

About

As the name says, the Siberian Husky was bred in Siberia by the Chukchi tribe over 2000 years ago! They were work dogs used to pull sledges in the harsh cold icy terrain. The Chukchi also believed that Huskies were the guardians of the gates of heaven. These guardians turn away anyone who was cruel to a dog during their life on earth. They are used now in sledge pulling competitions and in the sport of mushing. They make amazing house pets.

Appearance

Siberian Huskies have one of the most striking features of all dog breeds! Resembling wolves, they have a double coated thick fur to protect them from extreme cold conditions. They are medium sized with males between 20-26 kilograms and females between 17-24 kilograms. Skin colours usually are a blend of Black-White, Copper-red-White, Grey-White, Brown-White and pure White They have beautiful almond shaped eyes with various colours like Black, Blue, Brown and Green. Nose colour is usually Black or Brown but some dogs might have ‘Snow nose’ which is called Hypopigmentation. It is a condition where the amount of melanin is low in the skin. They have a heavily coated tail that curls towards their back. When they sleep, the tail will cover their nose to give extra warmth. This is also called ‘Siberian Swirl’

Temperament

Siberian Huskies are very friendly, gentle and known to be great with kids. They usually prefer howling over barking to communicate. Containing a Siberian Husky in one place for a long time would be a challenge as they would often try to escape. Highly energetic, they prefer cold outdoors than indoors. Seeks human company most of the time and if not, develops separation anxiety. They are very hard to train as they lack the interest in forced chores.

LifeSpan/Health

The average life expectancy of a Siberian Husky is between 10-12 years. They are prone to genetic seizures and cataracts. The key to try and increase their life expectancy is to make sure they have a proper diet, required exercise/walk, timely medication, yearly Vaccinations, Deworming tablets every three months and regular blood tests with Vet regarding the overall health.

Maintenance

Siberian Huskies have thick double coated fur. Thicker than most breeds that live in cold conditions. They thrive in cold temperatures. Hot and humid conditions are not ideal for them. A/C is a must if it is really necessary for them to live in warm/hot areas. Huskies’ long hair acts as insulation, which isn’t as effective as sweating. Huskies can overheat without realizing and signs include excessive panting, dry nose and mouth. An hour’s walk a day is required as they are high in energy. It is fine if you cannot bathe them regularly but it is very important to brush the coat every day and check the skin underneath. Since they have a dense coat, it makes Ticks and Fleas very hard to detect. So, removing the excess hair by brushing regularly is a priority. Avoid making them lie down on wet surfaces. This will cause their skin to smell bad and the hair to stick to each other. If time doesn’t permit, visiting a groomer is best advised.

Good food and nutrition is significant. Awareness of what to feed and how much to feed is extremely important. Processed food is not ideal due to the chemicals used causing increasing effects on the gut. Bloating, digestive issues, stinky stool, diarrhea, obesity and dehydration are some of the most common issues faced.

Canine diet requires a blend of fresh and natural ingredients . It should include the right amount of protein, fibre, fat and carbohydrate. We understand that it is not easy to make fresh food at home on a daily basis which meets all the nutritional requirements.
