Pomeranian: The Tiny Fluffball with a Big Heart and Bold Personality

Fun Fact

The oldest Pomeranian was 21 years old!

About

The Pomeranian originated from Pomerania in the northern part of Poland and Germany in the mid 19th century. They are categorized as toy breeds for their small structure and are descendants of the bigger breed named ‘German Spitz’. They were owned by royal families and were made popular by Queen Victoria as she was fond of small Pomeranians. She in fact owned 35 Pomeranians at the same time in the royal kennels. The breed thus started getting attention around the world during the early 20th century.

Appearance

These small breeds are compact and have double coats that consist of a longer, fluffier outer coat and a denser undercoat that’s softer and shorter. It acted as insulator towards the cold temperatures. They have a high fluffy tail that rolls back to the back of the body with a bushy hind. Dark black nose and shining expressive eyes. Stiff straight ears with dense necks. The average weight of males is between 3-5.5 kilograms and females between 2.5-4 kilograms. The weight might slightly vary due to how they are bred in different parts of the world. They come in various colours such as White, Black, Brown, Chocolate, Cream, Red, Grey, Orange and combinations of either of these colours.

Temperament

If you are planning to own a Pomeranian, know the fact that they are masters of barking! They are extremely attentive, alert and defensive. They are not submissive until they are trained from the time they are puppies. Without right socialisation, they can be a nuisance as they are difficult to handle when they see strangers and guests. Most Pomeraninan develop separation anxiety and if left alone for a long time, they become destructive by chewing household items and barking continuously. If not trained from they are puppies, then can be snappy towards their owners.

LifeSpan/Health

Pomeranians have a life span between 12-14 years. They develop a few health issues such as tartar build up which causes gum and root infection. They are also prone to eye infections like cataracts and tear duct problems. This can lead to blindness if untreated. Pomeranians are prone to developing hypothyroidism which slows down the metabolism. They develop black skin disease where they slowly lose their fur. They can also have a tracheal collapse because their windpipes and necks are small. The condition can occur and develop by pulling off the neck collar. Obesity is another condition that they develop.

Maintenance

Since they have long silky outer coats and dense inner coats, caring for them on a regular basis is very important. Brushing them everyday is recommended to avoid hair entanglement. Deshedding products helps a lot with their coat. It is recommended to brush their teeth two to three times a week and get any tartar removed by visiting a vet. They require 30 to 45 mins of walk everyday. Nails need to be trimmed regularly to avoid it becoming sharp that causes painful jumps on you and tearing soft materials around the house. Avoid making them lie down on wet surfaces. This will cause their skin to smell bad and the hair to stick to each other. If time doesn’t permit, visiting a groomer is best advised.

Good food and nutrition is significant. Awareness of what to feed and how much to feed is extremely important. Processed food is not ideal due to the chemicals used causing increasing effects on the gut. Bloating, digestive issues, stinky stool, diarrhea, obesity and dehydration are some of the most common issues faced.
