About
Mudhol Hounds (Caravan Hound) are one of the most famous Indian Breeds in the world. The modern breed was bred during the early 20th century by then king of Mudhol Shrimant Rajesaheb Malojirao Ghorpade. The king found that the local hunters of the region in Karnataka called ‘Beda” used them for hunting animals for food. This included small animals like rabbits/hares to big animals like wild deer and bucks. The king presented a couple of Mudhol hounds to King George V of the United Kingdom who then made it famous around Europe. They were later used as herd dogs and guard dogs. The Indian army is very interested in using the hounds surveillance and border protection duties.
Appearance
Mudhol hounds are muscular, lean, tall and long breed of dogs. Both male and female weigh between 24-30 kilograms. They have a broad head between the ears with a long snout and a black protruding nose. They have V shaped ears that hang down the head with a long muscular neck. They have large brown and hazel coloured eyes. Legs are long and straight with muscular wide hind legs. They have a short coat and a long straight tail. They usually have Cream, White, Fawn and Grey coats.
Temperament
Mudhol Hounds are alert, territorial, elegant, intelligent and reserved and a high energy dog breed. They are protective about their surroundings and family. Mudhol Hounds have a strong bite and are known for their scissor bite. They are not good with strangers due to their protective instincts. Despite this tendency, they are gentle by nature towards their family and fairly tolerant of children. They can be very challenging to train. So, it is advised to start their basic training from when they are pups.
LifeSpan/Health
The average life span of Mudhol Hounds are between 12-16 years. They are prone to Hip Dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts. Apart from this, they are very healthy dogs. However, the key to try and increase their life expectancy is to make sure they have a proper diet, required exercise/walk, timely medication, yearly Vaccinations, deworming tablets every three months and regular blood tests with Vet regarding the overall health. This breed is prone to get hip Dysplasia. Make sure they DO NOT jump from heights or constantly jump down from cots or sofas onto a smooth floor.
Maintenance
Since Mudhol Hounds have short hair, brushing can be done twice a week and bathing once a month depending on how dirty they get. Since they are high energy dogs, their walks and runs usually trim their nails naturally but if grown, needs to be trimmed manually. It is important to keep their ears clean and dry to avoid infections. Mudhol Hounds thrive in warm and dry climatic conditions. Cold hilly regions are not prefered. They are high maintenance dogs when it comes to their walks and exercises. They need a lot of space to run around. They require a minimum of 1.5 hours of walk a day and 30 minutes of exercise/play. They are best suited for farm houses and large spaces. Raising them in apartments and confined space is not good as they can get aggressive.
