Indian Pariah Dog: The Resilient Street Survivor with Loyalty and Intelligence in Its Roots (Indies)

Fun Fact

Indian pariah dogs are one of the oldest dog breeds in existence today!

About

Indian Pariah Dogs were in existence for over 4500 years ago and were used as hunting companions. They are widely spread in countries like India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and beyond South Asia. Excavations in the Mohenjo-Daro site (Indus Valley civilization) revealed an Indian Pariah Dog skull dating back to 2500 BC.

Appearance

Indies are medium-sized dogs and have a short coat. Males weigh between 15-30 kilograms and females between 10-25 kilograms. Their bodies are rectangular shaped. They have medium sized snouts and erect ears. Each dog varied in looks as they left to roam free and they mated in different parts of the country. So every Indie is unique to the region. They come in various colours and common ones are White, Black, Brown, Cream and combination of any of the colours.

Temperament

Indies are usually very playful, energetic, alert, social, defensive and territorial. When trained from puppies, they do very well with families and children. They are an excellent choice for first-time dog owners.

LifeSpan/Health

The average lifespan of Indies is between 12-14 years. They have very minimal genetic disorders. Common problems are Hip Dysplasias and Cancers. However, the key to try and increase their life expectancy is to make sure they have a proper diet, required exercise/walk, timely medication, yearly Vaccinations, deworming tablets every three months and regular blood tests with Vet regarding the overall health.

Maintenance

Indies are considered very low maintenance dogs in the world. They need brushing twice a day and teeth need to be cleaned once a week. You can bathe them one a month or when they get dirty. Ears need to be cleaned and dried regularly. They need to be checked for ticks and fleas as they are curious dogs and move towards nook and cranny.

Good food and nutrition is significant. Awareness of what to feed and how much to feed is extremely important. Processed food is not ideal due to the chemicals used causing increasing effects on the gut. Bloating, digestive issues, stinky stool, diarrhea, obesity and dehydration are some of the most common issues faced.

Canine diet requires a blend of fresh and natural ingredients . It should include the right amount of protein, fibre, fat and carbohydrate. We understand that it is not easy to make fresh food at home on a daily basis which meets all the nutritional requirements.

We at Genie Pet Meal understand the nutritional requirement of each dog because we customise the food according to the requirement. 100% fresh and natural ingredients like Chicken, 7 types of Vegetables, Rice, Egg white and other ingredients combined in the right quantity makes our food extremely healthy! It’s tailor made for your dog as we keep in mind the importance of giving the best to your fur ball.
