About

Golden Retriever was bred in the 19th century in Scotland mainly to retrieve game that were shot by hunters. Its keen sense of smell and intelligence allowed it to find the dead bird from a long distance. Hence the name ‘Retriever’ There are three kinds namely British, Canadian and American Retriever.

The long coated medium built breed has a dense undercoat to protect from cold weather. There are three main shades such as Golden, Chocolate Brown, and Light Brown. It has a flat head, long hung down ears, black nose and a muscular body. The bones are dense and have strong hind legs. The average weight of males are between 28-32 Kilograms and females are between 26-30 Kilograms. This might vary in a few cases of bloodline which needs to be checked with your vet.

Temperament

Generally, Golden Retrievers are one of the most friendly and lovable dogs. They are amazing pets and are very gentle with children. The goofy breed loves food toys! They mostly prefer indoors and want to laze around most of the time. They are not your typical guard dogs. They are attention seekers and love to cuddle. Pants a lot after a long walk and expects a lot of belly rubs!

LifeSpan/Health

Golden Retrievers have an average life expectancy of 10-12 years. They are prone to heart disease and Cancer. However, the key is to try and increase their life expectancy is to make sure they have a proper diet, required exercise/walk, timely medication, yearly Vaccinations, deworming tablets every three months and regular blood tests with Vet regarding the overall health. This breed is prone to get hip Dysplasia. Make sure they DO NOT jump from heights or constantly jump down from cots or sofas onto a smooth floor.

Maintenance

Golden Retrievers need a lot of care when it comes to their coat! The long soft hair needs regular care as they shed a lot and even more during hot months. They prefer cool temperatures. It is fine if you cannot bathe them regularly but it is very important to brush the coat every day and check the skin underneath. Since they have a dense coat, it makes Ticks and Fleas very hard to detect. So, removing the excess hair by brushing regularly is a priority. Avoid making them lie down on wet surfaces. This will cause their skin to smell bad and the hair to stick to each other. If time doesn’t permit, visiting a groomer is best advised.
