Doberman: The Sleek Guardian with Sharp Intelligence and Unmatched Loyalty

Fun Fact

Dobermann was bred using multiple breeds. Nobody knows how many dogs were involved to create the modern Dobermann!

About

Dobermann was bred in the state of Thuringia in Germany in the late 19th century by a person named  Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. He was a tax collector and also bred dogs. He bred the Dobermann for his personal protection during his rounds as he wanted a strong, intelligent and a dog with stamina. After his death, Otto Goeller created a club in the name and perfected the breed. Several dog breeds were used to create the Dobermann but the most contribution is from German Shepherd. During World War 2, the American Marine used them as war dogs, the police have used them for guarding, scouting and chasing down criminals. They gradually became house pets and guard dogs.

Appearance

Since they are guard dogs, they have a muscular and a very intimidating appearance and stance. They are considered to be medium to large dogs. The males typically weigh between 30-35 kilograms and females between 25-30 kilograms. They have a strong and sturdy body frame. Long snout and floppy ears. However, the ears are cropped to be erect for cosmetic reasons. They have a long body frame with the front of the body standing higher than the back. Their tails are docked when they are pups again for cosmetic reasons. They have short hair and the coat is usually a blend of Black and Tan. Pure breeds also come in Fawn and Tan colours.

Temperament

Although they are work and guard dogs, they have a reputation of being ferocious and aggressive, it’s just a stereotype. Dobermanns are composed, intelligent and aware dogs. Aggression is shown usually when they are triggered on purpose or accidently. Experiments have shown that they rank higher in playfulness than most breeds but rank low on sociability. Dobermans can be easy to train if they’re trained early and consistently, but they require a lot of mental and physical stimulation.

LifeSpan/Health

Dobermann have a life span of 10-12 years. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a life threatening heart condition that affects Dobermanns more than any other breed. Symptoms include weakness, exercise intolerance, coughing and rapid breathing. They are prone to hip dysplasia and Wobbler syndrome which is a condition where they walk in uneven steps. They also develop Hypothyroidism where the underactive thyroid gland causes weight gain and increased cholesterol. Dobermanns develop diabetes more than any other dog breeds. Since they have hip Dysplasia, Please make sure they DO NOT jump from heights or constantly jump down from cots or sofas onto a smooth floor.

Maintenance

Dobermanns are fairly easy to maintain. They need a lot of exercise and running. A minimum of one hours walk a day and a lot of play. They need a good protein rich diet to maintain their muscular body. The ears need to be checked on a regular basis as they are erect most of the time and can get infections. Since they have short hair, they shed less and brushing the coat can be done every other day. They need to be trained at a very early age when it comes to basic training and socialising.

Good food and nutrition is significant. Awareness of what to feed and how much to feed is extremely important. Processed food is not ideal due to the chemicals used causing increasing effects on the gut. Bloating, digestive issues, stinky stool, diarrhea, obesity and dehydration are some of the most common issues faced.

Canine diet requires a blend of fresh and natural ingredients . It should include the right amount of protein, fibre, fat and carbohydrate. We understand that it is not easy to make fresh food at home on a daily basis which meets all the nutritional requirements.

We at Genie Pet Meal understand the nutritional requirement of each dog because we customise the food according to the requirement. 100% fresh and natural ingredients like Chicken, 7 types of Vegetables, Rice, Egg white and other ingredients combined in the right quantity makes our food extremely healthy! It’s tailor made for your dog as we keep in mind the importance of giving the best to your fur ball.
